Most Popular SEO Myths Explained For SEOs

With so much misinformation about SEO having been dispensed over the years, which always creating confusion among SEOs– making it all the more difficult to separate the proverbial wheat from the chaff, as it were. Concerned about the potential harm misinformation about SEO can ultimately cause. Here is to compile an alphabetical listing of the most popular and persistent SEO myths, to either debunk or confirm their factuality.

1). Adwords:
Since the arrival of Google Adwords, there has been an ongoing debate over whether or not running an Adwords campaign can improve search engine rankings. Ultimately, only Google knows the answer to that question for sure. However, to my knowledge, there is no credible evidence to support the notion that Adwords can improve your search engine ranking. If there were indeed concrete evidence to the contrary, it stands to reason, everyone would just start an Adwords campaign to boost their rankings.

2). Anchor Text
Although it can be other colors, anchor text is typically the blue, hyperlinked text you see on a web page – the words that you click onto take you to another page.
Okay, but is anchor text important? Yes, it is because it’s a crucial element in the search engines complex algorithmic formula that helps determine the rankings of websites.
For example, suppose you have a blog that reviews digital camera’s; the more links you have with the words “digital camera reviews” in your anchor text, the greater your chances of increasing your ranking for the keywords digital camera reviews.

3). Alt Tags
Alt tags are used to display a short text description of an image. It gets displayed when you hover your mouse over the graphic. But are Alt tags an important part of SEO?
It depends on whom you ask. Some experts dismiss the importance of Alt tags altogether, while others tout its importance. Personally, I used to lean in the direction of “not important,” until I read a couple of outstanding articles that made me rethink my position.

SEO expert Bill Hartzer makes a strong argument for the use of Alt tags. In his article, Search Engine Optimization: Why Image Alt Tags are Important.

“There is strong evidence that the search engines are now giving more weight to Alt Tags than they are the Title Tag or even an H1 Tag on the page. What?!? Yes, that’s right. You do need to make sure you use proper Title Tags and H1 Tags, but more SEO value for organic search engine rankings can be gained by using proper Alt Tags than using proper Title Tags or H1 Tags.”
And in his article, Why You Need to Stop Ignoring Image Alt Attributes, AJ Wilcox of OrangeSoda.com makes a compelling common sense argument:

“Keyword usage in image alt text is classified as having minimal importance by a consortium of SEO experts, but that doesn’t mean it’s worthless. It is yet another opportunity to declare your relevance to your given keyword. The little things add up to big things together, so don’t ignore them.”
I agree with AJ. A lot of little things in combination do indeed add up to big things.

4). FFA Pages
FFA is an acronym for “Free-For All.” Here’s an example of an FFA page:
In a nutshell, FFAs are basically web pages of worthless links where anyone can submit their website’s URL for free (hence the term Free-For-All). One of the biggest and oldest SEO myths is, if you post your website’s URL on FFA pages, you will get massive traffic, as well increase your link popularity and search engine ranking. Here’s the truth: People who visit FFA pages do so only to post their own ads – not look at someone else’s. And any traffic you do get will be completely worthless!
In addition, FFA pages are considered both spammy and scammy, and posting on them could adversely affect your website’s reputation with the search engines – which could in fact hurt your ranking – or even get you banned. Why? Because in essence, FFA pages are nothing but link farms – and you know what Google thinks of link farms.
My advice: RUN, DON’T WALK away from FFA pages!

5). Header Tags
Header tags, for example H1, H2 are standard HTML elements used to define headings and subheadings on a web page.
Are they important? To my knowledge, there is no credible evidence to suggest that header tags have an effect on search engine rankings one way or the other. My advice: If you’re currently using header tags, continue using them if you wish. If you’re not using them, don’t worry about it.

6). Keyword Density
Question: What is the correct density of keywords on a web page?
Answer: There isn’t one.
Yes, I know this topic has been debated back and forth, but personally, I don’t think keyword density even exists as a calculable numeric constant. In other words, don’t worry about the correct keyword density. And don’t worry about counting keywords. Just create your web pages naturally, without trying to force or stuff keywords where they don’t belong. Then, let the proverbial chips fall where they may.

7). Keywords in Domain Name
Do keywords in a domain name help your ranking?
Based on my own experience of having your primary keywords in your domain name will help with your ranking. To what degree, however, only Google knows the answer to that. But since Google uses over 200 signals to determine the ranking of websites, I can’t imagine keywords in your domain name not carrying some amount of weight.

8). Meta-Tags
A meta-tag is the HTML coding that describes the contents of a web page.
Opinions vary on the importance of meta-tags, but in my opinion, they’re not nearly as important as they once were. They don’t have a significant impact on your rankings one way or the other. That being said, if you want to use them, it certainly won’t hurt anything – provided you don’t abuse them (i.e., keyword stuffing).

9). No follow Links
As you already know, Google doesn’t count “No follow” links, right? Wrong. Google looks suspiciously at sites that have an unbalanced ratio of Do follow links to No follow. Why? Because it’s an unnatural linking pattern that’s why. It’s also a huge red flag! Google prefers a healthy combination of both Do follow and No follow links. So contrary to popular belief, No follow links do add to a site’s overall link profile, and has the ability to rank for keyword phrases. And while No follow doesn’t influence Page Rank or pass link juice, it does contribute to your overall search engine ranking.

10). Page Rank (PR)
Is Page Rank important? One of the most controversial misunderstood, confusing and debated topics in the SEO universe is the importance of Page Rank.
However, in my not-so-humble opinion, Google’s 0-10 logarithmic toolbar Page Rank is nothing more than a “superficial beauty contest” vanity tool – very much out-of-date, and does NOT have a direct impact on a site’s ranking. That fact was established long ago.
I’m going to say this as succinctly as I possibly can: Toolbar Page rank is Not an Accurate Representation of a Website’s True Reputation with Google. In fact, if you do a little research, you’ll discover lower-PR URL’s consistently rank higher than higher-PR URL’s in Google’s SERPs (search engine results pages). Therefore, the only page rank you should be concerned about that has any significant importance is where your web pages rank in Google’s SERPs.
Does toolbar Page Rank have any importance at all? Yes, it has some…just not as much as many perceive it to have.

11). Reciprocal Links
Yes, reciprocal linking is an important part of SEO, but all links are not created equal. Achieving a high search engine ranking depends not only on the number, but also the quality of inbound links you have pointing to your site. For example, if your website does movie reviews, exchanging links with Betty’s Homemade Fudge won’t do you nearly as much good as exchanging links with a site that is thematically related to yours. So if you exchange links with other sites, be sure to keep relevancy in mind.

12). Site Maps
A sitemap is a collection of hyperlinks that outlines a websites structure. These links make it easier for visitors to navigate their way around your site, as well as make it easier for search engine spiders to crawl your site.
But do they have any SEO importance? Not really. A few years back, I thought they did. But recent experience has taught me sitemaps have no direct impact on search engine rankings.

13). The Open Directory Project (DMOZ)
Is getting a backlink from DMOZ still important? With the arrival of mega-popular social media sites, as well other types of high quality websites and blogs, DMOZ is not nearly as important or respected as it once was. Personally, I think your time would be better served trying to acquire high-quality backlinks from other sources.
Does that mean you shouldn’t waste your time submitting to DMOZ? No, it doesn’t. Since it only takes a few minutes to submit your site, I see no harm in submitting to DMOZ. But be advised, it can take up to a year or more to get your site approved – and it might not get approved at all. So I wouldn’t lose any sleep worrying about getting your site listed in DMOZ.
My advice: Simply submit your site and forget it!

14). Title Tag
The title tag is a critically important factor in achieving high search engine rankings. For those of you who don’t know what a title tag is, it’s the words displayed at the very top of your browser. It is also used as the title of your website in the SERPs. Therefore, you should put plenty of thought into writing your title tag – to make sure it’s as effective as possible. Your title-tag should also contain specific keyword phrases, in addition to the name of your company.

Improve your Website Visits by the Following SEO Techniques

Improving website visits are essential to anyone who owns a website and/or blog. Without traffic we have no customers or sales. Unfortunately traffic does not just come to us, we have to work at it and we have to be consistent and persistent.

Sales conversion rates normally average less than 5%. What this means is that only 5% of the people who visit your site will become a paid customer. So, to grow your sales, you need to boost your traffic and/or your conversion rates. Below are twelve things you can do right now to start increasing your traffic to get those sales.

1). Launch an Article Marketing Campaign - Writing articles is not as hard as you might think and it can do wonders for your traffic! Write about something you know and just pretend you are telling a friend all about it. There is no need to use big, fancy words because people just want basic, straightforward information. Submit your articles to some of the more prominent article directories such as Ezine Articles.

2). Guest Posting and/or Commenting on Blogs - Do a search to find quality blogs in your niche and ask if they accept guest posts. Write helpful comments on existing posts and leave your link. Get involved and start building your reputation! A good place to find blogs that need guest posts is BloggerLinkUp.

3). Write Website Reviews - Review websites on Alexa and get additional traffic and improve your Alexa rating. Go to Alexa, register an account and start reviewing and getting that traffic.

4). Relevant Keywords - There are a lot of free keyword suggestion tools you can use to find the top keyword searches for your niche. For example: if you own a pet care site, you would enter the words pet care and the tool would find the most relevant keywords for you to use on your site.

5). Yahoo Answers - Visit Yahoo Answers regularly and post as many answers as you can but be sure to follow their policies. You cannot try to directly lead people to your purchasing pages or leave low quality answers with your website link.

6). Interactive Site - Make your site interactive with forums, polls, surveys, etc. If your visitors feel more involved with your site, you will get repeat visits and longer stays. Add a little fun as well with contests, games, etc. Have a weekly or monthly scavenger hunt, trivia game, etc. Running a contest for a month can boost your traffic by thousands.

7). Business Cards - Produce an effective business card and hand them out wherever you go. Be sure to make it unique. Provide a discount on a first order. Add a personal message. Give a freebie. Make your business card more than just your name and address.
8). Podcasting - A podcast is an audio or video broadcast which people can listen to and/or watch on many devices. Make your podcast informative but interesting. Talk about how your site can help the people listening and let them know about any contests or other interactive activities you provide. All you need to make a podcast is a working microphone and a voice editor such as Audacity. Once you have made your podcast, promote it in podcast forums and podcast directories such as PodcastBlaster.

9). Moving Billboard - Turn your vehicle into a moving billboard to advertise your website wherever you go. Use affordable vinyl coverings such as Car Wraps or magnetic signs from Esigns. A day of fun can bring you a lot of traffic from your mobile billboard!

10). Social Media - These days social media is a must for more traffic. Join Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and more. Visit message boards and forums and really get involved. Answer people's questions, give helpful advice and information. Becoming an active participant in social media can do wonders for your traffic.

11). Offer a Freebie - Write an informative report or eBooks and provide it for free. Put in your website link and other business info. Let people know they can give it away on their sites as well. Add it to your email signature. Post it on your social media pages. Before you know it, your report could be all over the web bringing you new traffic every day.

12). Sitemap - Create an XML sitemap for your site and submit it to Google. A sitemap will allow more accessibility to your pages by the search engines, thus making your pages easier to find by people doing searches. You can easily create up to a 500 page sitemap with XML-Sitemaps. There are other options as well such as XSitemap. Do a search and find alternative options to choose from.

There are numerous ways to get traffic to your site. Some will work for you and some will not. Try the ideas in this article and add to them, or mold them to work even better for you. Traffic does not come easily but by working hard, trying new ideas and finding out what works best for you will be very effective in boosting your traffic.

Useful Offline Advertising Methods to Get Unique Visitors for your Website

With the advent of the Internet and the worldwide dominance and prominence of Google, Facebook and Twitter, one could reasonably assume the whole world revolves around the Internet. It doesn’t. There’s a great big offline universe out there with nearly 6 billion people in it that was here long before the Internet. And if you don’t have an offline marketing strategy to reach those billions of people, and complement your online marketing strategy, you’re missing out on a significant amount of traffic and income.

Following are some affordable and effective offline advertising methods that generate traffic to your website:

1). Bookmarks
Everyone has books in their home – some more than others. But I think that you’ll agree, just about everyone owns books. And what better way to get your marketing message in front of readers, than with a bookmark with your company name and website address printed on it, and distribution couldn’t be easier. Simply get a bunch of bookmarks printed up and hand them out to everyone you meet. You can purchase bookmarks imprinted with your company name.

2). College Newspapers
Why market to college students? Because the college market consists of about 15 million people who spend over 120 billion annually. In addition, more than 79% of college students go online at least once a day and over 95% of college students have access to the Internet. You can put your marketing message in front of tens of thousands of college students at an affordable price.

3). Postcards
Postcards are inexpensive to mail and are very effective. When people sort through their mail, they will often read postcards before they read anything else. You can take advantage of that fact, by starting a postcard marketing campaign. Lelli.com has been in the printing and direct mail business since 1977.

4). Business Cards
No, I’m not talking about your everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill business cards. I’m talking about business cards that stand out – that get people’s attention. For example, business cards that looks like folded money. They’re called drop cards or sizzle cards. Like the fore mentioned bookmarks, simply get a bunch of these unique, attention-grabbers printed up and hand them out to everyone you meet. You can also pin them up on public bulletin boards.

5). Flyers
Yes, businesses still use flyers and yes, they still work quite effectively. You can get a bunch of flyers printed up at a very reasonable price and post them all over town. Your local printer can print them up for you, or you can go online and order from Lelli.com.

6). Local Business Journals
The Business Journals are part of a group of local business newspapers with a national readership of 4 million. For example, in Albany, New York where I live, the local business journal is called The Business Review. Boston, Massachusetts has a similar publication called Boston Business Journal. And in Dallas, Texas the publication is called Dallas Business Journal.

In addition to exposure for your business and website, The Business Journals are an absolute goldmine for leads. Unfortunately, The Business Journals aren’t available in every city, but they are in many of the largest U.S. cities. Go to BizJournals.com, to see if The Business Journals are available where you live.

7). Refrigerator Magnets
Consumers are in and out of their refrigerator several times a day. In addition, refrigerators are generally located in the kitchen, where many families eat their meals, pay the bills and do a whole host of different activities. A refrigerator magnet is an ideal way to reach consumers. You can order refrigerator magnets from Magnets.com.

8). T-shirts

If you walked around in public in a T-shirt with the name of your company and website address printed on it, you’d be surprised how many people would see it – especially if you work in a high-traffic environment like a supermarket or fast-food restaurant. You can have some T-shirts printed up and distribute them among friends and/or family members. You can order promotional T-shirts from Zazzle.com.

9). Community Shopper Newspaper Classifieds
Nearly every community, regardless of size, has a community shopper newspaper like Penny saver. You’ve probably noticed the brightly colored “free” shopper newspaper dispensers outside of supermarkets, which is where they’re usually located. Some shoppers are mailed directly to people’s homes and while these shopper newspapers are free, their classified ads are read by millions of people nationwide. You can advertise in shopper newspapers by contacting NationwideAdvertising.com.

10). Community Bulletin Boards
You can find community bulletin boards in Laundromats, gas stations, supermarkets, office buildings, schools, libraries, community centers, fitness clubs, etc. You can post your business cards and flyers on community bulletin boards for free. I have to admit, I didn’t think people really paid any attention to community bulletin boards. Then one day, I decided to make a handwritten flyer to sell my car, and posted it on the bulletin board in an office building that was located just a few minutes from where I lived at the time. An hour after I posted the flyer, I got a call about my car. I sold it that evening to that same caller.

11). Luggage Tags
If you know people who travel a lot, or you travel a great deal yourself, you can take advantage of those entire frequent flyer miles by exposing the name of your business and website address to travelers worldwide with promotional luggage tags.

12). Car Magnets
Car magnets have always been a highly-effective way to promote a business. Just driving around town normally, without doing anything out of the ordinary, you’d be surprised how many eyeballs are exposed to your company name and website address. If you have never used car magnets to promote your business, then start now because better late than never. You can order custom car magnets from Signazon.com.

13). Coffee Mugs
While I personally don’t drink coffee, just about everyone I know does. Why not gift the coffee drinkers you know with a coffee mug with your company name and website address printed on it? After all, if people are going to drink coffee, they might as well drink out of one of your mugs, right? You can order promotional coffee mugs in your local area.

14). Rear Window Decals
Imagine every car on the road that is driving behind you being exposed to your company name and website address. Well, you don’t have to imagine it, you can actually make it happen with rear window decals. And guess what happens when you stop at a red light or stop sign? That’s right; the people driving the cars directly behind you are a captive audience.

15). Car Air Fresheners
As long as I can remember, I’ve always had an air freshener dangling from my rearview mirror. I like my car to smell nice. Well, guess what…so do millions of other drivers! And since so many drivers like their cars to smell nice, why not hand out custom air fresheners with your company name and website address to everyone you meet.

16). Desk Calendars
One of the most useful items you can give someone is a desk calendar. After all, everyone needs a calendar, right? Yes, calendars are useful, but they’re also highly-effective promotional items, because people use them constantly to write down appointments, remember important dates, events and occasions, jot down notes, etc. Why not give people something useful, and promote your business at the same time.

17). Mouse pads
Even with the advent of laptops and smart phones, millions of people still prefer to use a traditional desktop computer with a mouse. And every mouse needs a mouse pad, right? Hand out mouse pads with your company name and website address to people you meet.

18). Promotional Caps
Just like with the aforementioned T-shirts, if you walked around in public in a cap with the name of your company and website address printed on it, you’d be surprised how many people would see it – especially if you work in a high-traffic environment like a supermarket or fast-food restaurant. You can have some caps printed up and distribute them among friends and/or family members.

19). Disposable Cigarette Lighters
While smoking is no longer in vogue or cool like it was in the fifties, sixties or seventies, millions of individuals still light up on a daily basis. And more often than not, they use a cigarette lighter to light their cigarettes. You can put the name of your business and website address in the hands of smokers by advertising on disposable cigarette lighters.

20). Distribute Brochures Locally:
It’s a good idea to distribute brochures carrying your business, product or service details with your website address. You should distribute those at the big gatherings, public functions and public places where you will find huge people to share your business contributions. They may need your service or products.

Trying the above offline advertising methods for your business website, you will definitely get unique customers at your locality.

Increase Local Visitors for Your Business Website

Though this is fast growing web world, local visitors are still very important. If someone is looking for information online, say the address or phone number of your business, they don’t want to dig through you site to find it. A local profile gives them all the information they need in a fast and efficient format. Local profiles can also rank on their own in the search engines, increasing your online brand presence. They can also be a source of targeted traffic and quality inbound links.

The same rules of on-site optimization still apply when it comes to local profiles, but here are some tips for local search optimization:

1). Create Multiple Local Search Profiles:
Business owners definitely want to claim their listings in Google, Bing and Yahoo. These profiles often show up in the top of the SERP for each search engine, respectively. But there are plenty of other local search sites that deserve attention. Sites like Yelp and Urbanspoon are incredibly popular with customers looking to make immediate purchasing (as in choosing a place to eat or shop) decisions. Other sites like YP.com (the online Yellow Pages), Citysearch, MerchantCircle and Local.com are also great places to create a profile.

2). Fill Profiles out as Completely as Possible:
The more content you have on your local search profiles, the more information the search engines can comb through. Don’t just post your phone number and address (although those are must!) and call it a day. Include business hours, accepted forms of payment, languages spoken, directions, company biography, pictures, videos and consumer reviews. Customer reviews in particular can be incredibly beneficial. Having that element of a 3rd party recommendation goes a long way in encouraging potential customers to choose you over another business.

You can encourage your customers to write a review by offering them an incentive, like 10% off their next purchase. Most people only write a review if the experience is truly remarkable or absolutely horrible. You want everyone who was pleased with your company to say so.

3). Monitor Your Profiles:

If you are accepting customer reviews, it’s important that you are aware of what people are saying about your company. You need to know if a string of bad reviews went up recently; they might be buying your good ones. You also need to see if other people are creating local search profiles on various sites for your company. Usually anyone can create the listing, but as the owner you want to make sure you claim each one. This is the only way you can remain in control over what gets posted.

4). Give Options for Your Local Visitors to Interact Easily:
Give easy interacting options for your visitors like online chatting, quick contact or customer contact through toll free phones. These things will greatly progress your business reputation and grow your business.

Top 10 SEO Tactics to Boost your Website Traffic with Unique Visitors

No matter how hard some people try to mystify SEO, it is not as complicated as many would lead you to believe. Despite all the techno jargon that many in the field will throw at you: SERPs, SEM, Page Rank, Keyword Density, Vertical Search, Algorithms... SEO is really simple to do if you understand some basic concepts and follow some easy steps.

Search Engine Optimization is getting your content listed in all the top positions in Google, Yahoo and MSN for your targeted keywords. When someone does a keyword search in a search engine for your particular subject or niche - you want your site or content to be at the top of the list.

Here are 10 SEO tactics that have worked and are working for me at this moment in time. I make this clarification because you must understand search engines, especially Google, are constantly redefining how they rank pages. Here are my favorite tactics and strategies:

1). Quality Content is and always will be your number one factor for getting high rankings and keeping them. You must understand search engines are simply businesses who supply a product like any other company. That product is information. They must offer quality results to anyone using their service to solve a problem, answer a question or to buy a product. The more relevant, the more targeted the search solution they return, the higher the overall quality of their product and the more popular their search engine will become. Providing quality content is vital for SEO success.

2). Keywords are your number one tools for achieving high rankings. You must understand keywords and how they work on the web. You must know how many searches are made each day for your chosen keywords. Sites like Word Tracker and SEO Book will give you a rudimentary number of searches. Design your pages around your targeted keywords and don't forget to do some deep-linking to these pages on your site. Find and build backlinks to these interior keyword pages and not just to your home page or domain URL. Picking keywords with medium to low competition has worked out well for me. So too has using the more targeted and higher converting "long-tail" keywords been very beneficial for me.

3). On-Page Factors and site design will play a major role in the spidering and indexing of your site/content. Make sure all your pages are SEO friendly, made sure all your pages can be reached from your homepage within no more than three levels. Keeping a sitemap listing all your major pages makes the search engines happy. Make sure you have all your meta tags such as title, description, keywords, headers... are all optimized. (Title = around 65 characters, Description = around 160 characters) Remember, your title and description should not only be keyword targeted but these are the first contact/impression anyone will see of your site - make sure you use them to draw and entice interested visitors to your site and content. Also make sure your title and URL are keyword matched for maximum effect. Having your major keyword in your Domain Name also helps, using a pike | to separate different elements of your title has helped my rankings, so too does having your keyword in the first and last 25 words on your pages.

4). Google will send you the most qualified traffic so concentrate the majority of your SEO efforts on Google. Don't ignore Yahoo! or MSN but Google is king of search so give it the respect it deserves. With its new browser, Google's influence will only grow stronger so you must optimize your pages for Google. Use Google's Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics to fine-tune your pages/content for Google. I also use Google Alerts to keep up on my niche keywords and for comment link-building on the newly created pages Google is indexing.

5). Link Building is still the most effective way to boost your search rankings. Make sure you get backlinks from relevant sites related to your niche market and make sure the 'anchor text' is related to your keywords but don't ignore the text and overall quality of the content linking to you. The anchor text is the underlined/clickable portion of a link. Don't forget linking is a two-way street; make sure you link out to high quality, high ranked relevant sites in your niche.

6). Article Marketing is a well established method of getting quality backlinks and it still works. Writing short 500 - 700 words informative helpful articles with your backlinks in the resource box is still very effective for getting targeted traffic and backlinks. Longer articles have also worked for me and I use an extensive network of distribution including Submit Your Article, Isnare, Thephantomwriters... plus other major online sites. Don't forget the whole element of blogging and RSS feeds in your article distribution. And always remember you're also using these articles to pre-sale your content or products. Don't forget to leverage sites like Squidoo, Hubpages... to increase your rankings and traffic.

7). Onsite Traffic Hubs
have worked extremely well for me. These traffic hubs are whole sections of your site devoted to one sub-division of your major theme. For example, if you have a site on Gifts, then wedding gifts could be a separate section. This would be fully fleshed out with extensive pages covering everything dealing with wedding gifts - a self-contained keyword rich portion of your site on wedding gifts. Works similar as a sub-domain but I prefer using a directory to divide it up, such as yourdomain/wedding_gifts. (Most experts suggest always using a hyphen in your URLs but underscores have worked fine for me.) Search engines love these keyword/content rich hubs but keep in mind you're creating content to first satisfy your visitors.

8). WordPress blog
software is extremely effective for SEO purposes. WordPress software is easy to install on your site even if you have no experience with installing server-side scripts. Besides search engines love these highly SEO friendly blogs with their well structured content and keyword tagging. I have at least one of these on all my sites to draw in the search engines and get my content indexed and ranked. I also use Blogger (owned by Google), Bloglines and other free blogs to help distribute my content.

9). Social Bookmark/Media
Sites are becoming very important on the web. These include a whole range of social sites like MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter... media news sites like Digg, SlashDot, Technorati... you must get your content into this whole mix if you want to take full SEO advantage of Web 2.0 sites. You should be joining these sites and using them. It's time consuming but it will keep you in the swing of things. One simple thing you must do is to put social bookmark buttons on all your pages so that your visitors can easily bookmark your content for you. You can use a WordPress plug-in or I like using a simple free site/service from Addthis.com which gives me a simple button to put on all my content.

10). Master Plan!
Many webmasters and site owners forget to develop or have an overall master plan/strategy when it comes to SEO. You must have an understanding of what SEO is and what it can do for you and your site. More importantly, you just don't want SEO - you want effective SEO. In order to achieve effective SEO you must have three things: Relevance, Authority and Conversions.

First, your content/site must be relevant to the topic or niche area you're pursuing - your content must fit in and be related to all the other sites in your niche. That's why closely themed sites do so well in the search engines, they give only relevant content to what's been searched for or discussed.

Second, your content/site must be perceived as an authority site on your subject or niche. Establish this authority position and the search engines will love you and your content. One way is to develop this authority, besides offering superior content, is to form links/partnerships with other perceived authority sites in your field. Always strive to make your site an authority site - tops in your niche - the one site everyone has to check before drawing or forming a conclusion.

Third, conversions should be your main goal of any SEO efforts because you want to convert your targeted traffic into site members, subscribers and buyers or just repeat visitors. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Concepts for Better Website Ranking

Sometimes another form of language and imagery is required in order to communicate vast ideas for common consumption. This is one of such instances where an array of algorithmic functions will be given a conceptual vehicle to map their role in the creation of a top 10 search engine ranking.

Since the concept of the universe is a great model, we will borrow concepts originating from planetary forces ranging to universal phenomenon like gravity, orbits, the concept of the internet being a giant nebula of computers sharing virtual space and employing data retrieval, etc. Bear in mind, this is only an interpretation.

If you can visualize your website as a dot and each keyword as its own orbiting sphere of concentric influence, you have to create a series of eventful transactions (like creating content over time, building links, having a supportive format for internal linking) that classify and elevate your website as a candidate for relevance within the center of the sphere of influence for that keyword.

By viewing each keyword as a cumulative objective (like peeling away the layers of an onion) once you reach the center, your site radiates a beacon in all directions whenever a broad match or more general search is conducted with those keywords as search queries.

When you first start a website, since the site is empty your relevance is also at zero. As you continue to add content to your site (like filling up a glass with liquid) the site begins to take on a particular persona based upon what content is contained within the site.

As a result, your site creates its own orbit and gravitational pull where the content and subjects traversed within the context of your pages become beacons that attract similar orbiting keywords, concepts and semantic variations.

The analogies presented are to elaborate on the function of search engine algorithms which essentially consolidate each site into a type of conical tube that best describes the subject matter it contains. Then based on the vacuum created when someone actually invokes those qualities (through a linear search) the search bridges the gap and projects through all of the other spheres of influence (from the web) to extract the most relevant pieces of data and reformats them for communication via retrieval.

In order to appear as the most relevant result, your site must have enough supporting relevance from external clusters (others sites) that also contain the same type of data cloud (a collective summary of the sites content) which can change forms (like a liquid to a gas, a gas to a solid) and act as a homing signal to create continuity between its own orbit (on the micro level) and serve as a piece of the puzzle for the main theme in the index (as a part of the whole like a planet in the solar system, which belongs to a galaxy, etc.).

The Job of search engines is to be able to index, retrieve and create order from all of the orbits created from each websites signature as it occupies the cloud of online space (data shared across multiple servers), gauge a metric and then determine the usefulness of the metric and how it applies to a query (which like a vacuum) is seeking the most relevant result.

Just think of a search as pure potential that does not exist until executed, then on assembly its purpose is to seek out the most likely orbit (website) using the nebulous data cloud (the web) to bridge the gap using a vacuum that through traversing aggregate links and other sites (through assessing their relevance score) until it finds the most suitable supporting environment.

If you can use this visual map as a blueprint, then you understand that rankings are all a result of how strong the broadcast signal is, signal strength in this capacity is based on relevance, continuity and popularity. In order to produce a ranking of such magnitude (such as a competitive keyword) you must move from the outermost bounds of the keywords sphere of influence, into its center to attain the top ranking result.

The stages involved are research, planning, execution, testing, refinement, collaboration and strategy.

If any of the steps are excluded in does not mean you still cannot create top 10 placements for your website, it is just that if reproducing the phenomenon is important to you, then understanding the proper chronology and strategy behind the tactics should concern you. For example, topical relevance, site synergy / persona, authority and orderliness all impact placement for your website.

1) Research - You need to research the appropriate keywords to develop the appropriate gravity in your own site to attract the search engines crawlers (who index the content and include the site approximation of relevance score).

2) Planning - After finding your semantic base, create topical fields of information (multiple keyword-rich pages) within the site (using a content management system) or supporting site architecture. If search engines cannot retrieve the data (based on crawling errors from bots, poor site architecture or otherwise) then you is automatically excluded from participating with other forms of life contained in digital space (the web).

3) Execution - Build links, either through internal linking (if you have an authority site that is enough) or through external links from other sites (data clusters with relevance) that have similar signatures containing the topical relevance shared by your own site.

The closer the relevance between things like (a) is the site from the same industry or niche (b) is there related content between the sites (c) what keywords are used to link to and from the two sites (the vacuum) and (d) where each site resides in the overall relevance model for each of the overlapping keywords they both share, gives the target site the opportunity to receive a jolt of authority through osmosis and synergistic infusion. The bottom line is the quality of the links, but topical relevance also adds even more weight to the orbit of the site receiving the link from an external site.

4) Testing – Test the results, ping the site from using a beacon in the nebula, use a search engine to determine how close to the center of the keywords your site has become. If you targeted 10 keywords for example and dedicated an ample amount of time, effort and energy to build a coherent series of pages on the site, created strong internal linking and then found at least 5 sources for links to each page (with a wide array of IP diversity) in other words not from the same series of sites, then you should have created enough orbital relevance as well as made a strong impression on the ethers in the data cloud (your sites algorithmic counterpart) to appear as a relevant result.

5) Refinement - If your website did not make the grade (is not ranking yet) then you can always (1) wait for all of the factors to settle a bit more and then re-evaluate the keyword saturation (2) build more content and shore up your main subject or subjects or (3) look for other sites with authority that can augment your sites reputation online (in the nebulous data cloud known as the web).

6) Collaboration - Moving a website closer to the center of a series of keywords requires understanding. You need to know that each time you add a page or a link it changes (1) the sites internal topical relevance and orbit / signature and (2) how other sites and keywords within the web react to it based on the search engines algorithm. The translation here is, by viewing each keyword as a cumulative apex, you can set in motion a series of events to create a chain reaction to close the gap for those keywords.

More competitive phrases may take many months to a year or more, other phrases in the nebula (the web) may only take a few hours or a few days at best to acquire. The point being, your websites orbit is entirely up to you, how others link to it and the collective blueprint it leaves on its environment in the nebula however is another part of the equation that you have to sculpt over time through releasing consistent information on a topic to reinforce the basis of its existence.

7) Strategy - the strategy is simple, rank for as many keywords that either funnel relevant traffic to your site or overlap with a series of other keywords that have latent potential down the road. The web is all about multiple layers overlapping and linking through internalization and expression. These two dynamic attributes are responsible for moving from site to site or from page to page within a website. Depending on your ability to see beyond the immediate goal (which is to create relevance) the real goal is to create a hub where your site literally overlaps with thousands of keywords and then refines each branch to delve deep into the long-tail as well as hit the high notes with the most sought after two word phrases as well.

By using the concepts such as topical relevance, gravity, orbit, continuity, the query-based vacuum, the nebulous data cloud and information retrieval in a way that anyone can understand, creating a systemic method for creating relevance is a by product which means multiple top 10 rankings to claim as trophies that increase website traffic.

Avoid Ten Things When Running an SEO Campaign

There are plenty of SEO companies and consultants on the Internet that can help you out and plenty of free forums and guides that will give you the basics. Even if you do decide to use the skills and expertise of an SEO firm, it is still important that you at least know the basics of SEO so that you can also work with the company to make the results even better.

There are loads of things that you need to be doing within an SEO campaign, but there are also some things that you REALLY must avoid and we take a look at some of these below with our top ten things to avoid when running an SEO campaign.

Waiting Too Long - One of the biggest mistakes most people make is waiting too long to even begin an SEO campaign. If you have a website you should be running some kind of SEO, no matter how young the site is because a good campaign can help to get a higher ranking in the early days.

Targeting Competitive Keywords - If you sell houses then the chances of you getting to the top of Google for the keyword "houses" are going to be slim, to say the least. If you are working in an extremely competitive market, then you need to look outside of the box and start looking at easier keywords that you can rank for, because realistically, it is going to take a lot of time, effort and a little bit of luck to top the charts for the most competitive search terms.

Ignoring Long tail Keywords - Many people think that they should always go for the most popular keywords, but these often tend to be the most competitive, so you need to look at the long tail keywords. If you targeted 5 long tail keywords that all attracted 200 searches a month but were less competitive than one that attracted 1000 searches a month, you stand more chance of getting the traffic you want in a much shorter time.
Writing Rubbish Content - Content is king for Google and the search engine is so advanced and sophisticated these days that it can easily spot duplicate content and also poor quality content. The main aim is to write high quality content that is useful, informative and offers the user a good experience; else you will just be wasting your time and hindering your progress.

Publishing Poor Articles - Content on your site is very powerful, but you should also look at writing articles and releasing them on some of the more powerful article directories like EzineArticles. If you are going to do this, then make sure you only publish good quality articles, otherwise they will be rejected and once again you will have wasted your time.
Spammy Blog Comments - Although blog commenting can be a good way to get relevant links back to your site, if you go around adding poor and unrelated comments, then this is only going to backfire on you in the long run. If you are going to comment on blogs, then make sure that you post quality comments on quality sites and check out the link follow status and the page rank / authority before you even begin.

Reciprocal Linking - Swapping links used to be one of the methods used for acquiring links until like most link practices it was abused and Google started to shy away from the weight it carried in rankings. Although it can be a good idea to swap links with local businesses or related businesses, do not waste your time swapping links and also limit the number of outbound links you have on your site.

Bad Link Neighborhoods - Always avoid linking to or getting links from "bad neighborhoods" - sites like gambling, adult and other sites that might be considered a little bit risqué. If you are found to have loads of links on these types of sites, then you are going to be in trouble, so always make sure you are careful about where links are added to your site.

Ignoring Your Own Website - SEO begins at home in our opinion because if your website is rubbish, any extra traffic you generate will be a waste of time. Add to this the fact that if your meta titles and content are really poor, you are also going to lose out on ranking because two of the biggest factors when it comes to onsite SEO are meta titles and quality content.

Running Out Of Patience - SEO takes time - fact! You cannot expect to start an SEO campaign and get overnight results; it will take weeks, if not months, before you really start to get the results that you deserve if you run a good campaign. SEO should be an ongoing thing, running for as long as you decide to keep your website alive, because SEO is one of those things that goes on forever and is a constant effort.

SEO Tips for Small Business Website Owners

Many business owners understand the importance of their site ranking well on Google and the other search engines, but for many search engine optimization (SEO) remains a mystery. Here we are sharing some SEO tips for small or medium business owner can understand easily.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process of making your website popular by showing in search engines result pages when someone using a search term or keywords relevant to your business.  It can provide a great source of traffic for your website and build new customers and clients for your business without investing any thing.

Some helpful SEO tips for small business website owners are as follows:

1). Do a Proper Business Related Keyword Analysis:

Choose proper keywords for your business website with a proper keyword analysis to represent worldwide through internet. Search the most relevant words and phrases explaining about your business services, products or other benefits you providing for your customers. Make a rough list of these words to use them writing content for your website. The most relevant keywords should be used in Meta elements (Title, Keyword, heading and description) of the website.

2). Page Title is most Important:

Keep the page titles short and focused on the keyword rich content. Avoid putting your company name in your page title. If someone searches for your company name, they will definitely find your website. But if someone search for keywords related to your business, then he unable to find your company in search terms, and you ultimately loose a customer. Search engines give very high importance to the page title.

Also, having your company name repeat over many pages can negatively affect the behavior of search bots. It may seem like duplication. The page title holds a lot of weight with search engines. Don’t waste that power!

3). Add Quality Content:

Add most relevant, high quality and unique content describing your business services and products. You want to get about 10-30 pages of new content a month and get this content linked to. If you write scholarly papers, you can get yourself linked to by .edu and high PR sites, which will sharply boost your site. Finally, by honing in your articles on specific keywords, you can target new areas and reap niche searches.

Remember, niche searches – as a group – are usually worth more than the major terms. This is for two reasons: a niche search indicates that the searcher is relatively more sophisticated. He or she knows what they want. They tend to buy product at higher rates. Secondly, around half of all searches are 2 or 3 words. Considering the vast amount of possibilities this creates, there is a world of marketing opportunity.

A spin on this is adding articles to other sites. While it may be hard to create an interesting article based on your subject, if you do so, and make it snappy, you may get some Digg or del.ico.ous love.

Also, many of the midrange keywords are not heavily contested. A lot of websites still think that a good search engine strategy is just repeating keywords, something that was true in the early years of 2000. Worst of all, because they may have OK search engine results, they may be complacent.

Often their good results come from a lack of competition, and an adept campaign can eat away at their share.

4). Beware Grand Promises:

SEOs who promise to submit your site to thousands of search engines are misleading you. There are only a few major search engines, the top three of which are Google, MSN, and Yahoo for the US. For marketing in Asia and Europe, other engines hold reign, but again with a few industry leaders. The top search engines of every single country put together would be far less than 100.

There may be some special cases where your content is very, very specific, and you’d want to target quite selectively. In that case, submission to a specialized search engine would be fine. But in general, a promise to submit your website to thousands of search engines is meaningless. After submission to thousands of search engines, your website may end up on a link-farm. Even if Google has not already devalued the links from that page, hurting your site, it may do so at will later.

Legit link building submission techniques are, of course, a component of online marketing. But ignore offers that sound too good to be true. Know what is happening with your information.

5). Avoid Black Hat SEO Tricks:

Your competitor is out-ranking you. You check their website out: two things stand out. They have hundreds of keywords stuffed on their page, and they use two titles (repeat the title tag). Thinking this is their key to success; you quickly copy that technique, or request your tech guys to do it for you.

Don’t try this instead. Use a PR checker tool to evaluate their website. Analyze their backlinks. Most likely you’ll find that their position is not the result of high quality SEO – the competition is simply just doing a worse job.

Using Black Hat techniques to try to trick search engines won’t work in the long run and, in the worst case scenario, will result in your page being removed from the search index entirely. Car giant Mercedes Benz once had their site removed from Google due to such violations.

6). Optimize Images with “alt tag”:

Optimize everything. Google is increasing its use of Universal Search, but is doing so subtly. It’s not hitting you over the head with images in every search. Search for Monet. First you’ll see "Image Results." Search for Bird Flu. First you’ll find a prompt to refine your results, then, scrolling down, perhaps a news entry, then on the bottom images. Images, video, and news articles are now mixed in with regular search results. This is a cutting edge shift, and some laggards have yet to realize its potential.

You need to have every part of your website optimized.

What this means is giving images accurate titles. Instead of "02303212.jpg," have "widget-doing-dance.jpg" The better image title has some impact on search engines. Also, make sure to give your images alt text (by simply adding alt = "text-here" in the html that adds the image). This does three things: makes your website accessible to people who can’t see your image and helps your search engine rankings.

Your alt text should be pertinent, add mood, and if possible contain keywords.

7). Update Alternate URLs by Redirecting:

Search engines like Google treats http://yoursite.com and http://www.yoursite.com, as two different URLs. These two URLs are treated as separate websites, and can confuse Search Engines.

In the worst case scenario, the Search Engine flags the two different pages as being duplicates of one another. Being flagged as duplicate material will, at the least, hurt your rating. At worst, it’ll send your site to the Supplemental index, which is like a garbage dump for websites.

To fix this problem, use this .htaccess code: (without the >>>:)
>>>: Options +FollowSymLinks
>>>: RewriteEngine on
>>>: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite.com [NC]
>>>: RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

This will redirect the http://yoursite.com to http://www.yoursite.com. The opposite can be done to redirect http://www.yoursite.com to http://yoursite.com, if so desired.

8). Use Wikipedia:

Write a Wikipedia article if your website is big enough. If not, keep pumping out the content until it is. Although Wikipedia itself will not add much to your ranking, it is almost a search engine in and of itself. If and when a potential client/customer wants to look up your information, many times they’ll just plug it into Wikipedia and see what pops out. Also, many other websites copy the Wikipedia information, and those links to your website may add value.

In writing your Wikipedia article, make sure to be balanced. In general, try to create some conflict or story. Give free product to less well-off people. Start a scholarship. Find a celebrity to siphon attention from.

9). Use YouTube and others Video Sources:

Create a YouTube video. Consumers are very good at figuring out what is an ad and what isn’t, at least in the conventional sense. Online videos, however, can easily slip under the radar as long as they are entertaining. Take advantage of this by creating a few videos that deal with whatever it is you do.

Make the videos funny. Make them good-sized but not too long. Make sure to include a URL in the video itself. You may make some more sales and increase awareness about your business website.

10). Use Social Networking Media:

Use social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin etc. for creating social awareness about your website and business. Share knowledge, tips and latest news by creating friends. Update your profile with relevant information. Currently social networks are major source of visitors.

Make it very easy for your users to spread the word. Include "Tell a friend" functionality where and whenever possible. Also make sure to make it really, really simple. Everyone likes it when something works without too much thinking.

Another form of this is to add Social Bookmarking (SB) capability. SB is relatively new by real world standards and old stuff by internet standards – what it is, basically, is sites like Digg, Del.icio.us, and others, that let users compile their website preferences with others. You want to make it easy for you users to bookmark you.

In addition to spreading the word, Social Bookmarks have tremendous influence on Search Engines. Expert SEOs have recently done experiments where, by using the power of Social Bookmarking, they were able to gain top ten positions for very, very competitive search terms.
